City-to-city learning lab on nature-based planning and adaptation

In 2018 we established an interdisciplinary learning lab in the southern region of Scania (Skåne) in Sweden to exchange and co-create knowledge on nature-based adaptation planning.
The lab brings together representatives from five municipalities (Malmö, Lomma, Eslöv, Höganäs and Kristianstad) and scholars from different backgrounds. Six scholars from three academic institutions at Lund University and eight municipal representatives participate. The lab was based on local needs and a desire for increased knowledge exchange, which were identified during a joint workshop in 2017. Once the lab was established, each municipality selected existing projects of nature-based solutions for climate adaptation, which were subject to a step-by-step analysis, from the initial project idea, to comprehensive and detailed planning, procurement, implementation, maintenance and follow-up (monitoring and evaluation).

Scholars and municipal representatives interact in the city-to-city learning la.

Lessons learned

Specific questions were: What are the principle planning steps during the process? When, how and why is nature and climate adaptation considered? What are the associated planning structures, mechanism and tools that support their integration? Who is involved, when and why? What are the structures, mechanism and tools that support integration as well as internal and external cooperation and participation? What are the differences between the involved municipalities? What can we learn from them to advance nature-based planning and adaptation? Four of the analyzed projects focused on the creation of new residential areas and three on targeted interventions within existing areas, notably green private–public nodes, a school complex and a green embankment. So far, a total of six workshops and five field visits have been successfully implemented, and a range of video clips have been developed to summarize some of the outcomes so far.
