9:45-10:25 Keynote − Translocal urban lives: Rescaling justice in African cities

Conceptions of the right to the city are located within principles that assume that all urban dwellers seek political, social and economic inclusion in a particular space. In cities and neighbourhoods with high levels of mobility and translocal imaginations, justice is achieved at multiple geographical and temporal scales. As such, policies based on sedentarist and space bound conceptions of justice may ultimately work against the desires of large numbers of current and future urban dwellers. This talk explores how we might rethink ‘rights to the city’ and urban inclusion in 21st century African cities.
