Adapting and Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals at the City Level

It is increasingly being recognized that cities face a range of complex and interrelated challenges. Agenda 2030 and the New Urban Agenda were adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015 and December 2016, respectively, to address some of these challenges at the national and city level. Implementation of Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) officially started in January 2016. In this seminar, Sandra Valencia will present initial findings on how cities are engaging with, interpreting and implementing Agenda 2030 and the New Urban Agenda in their early years of implementation.

The seminar will draw from a comparative research project currently being conducted by Mistra Urban Futures in a sample of 9 medium-size cities in Argentina, India, Kenya, South Africa, Sweden and the UK. The research includes analysis of how these internationally agreed agendas relate and are relevant to the cities’ own plans and targets. Furthermore, the presentation will include the results of a rapid screening exercise done of Mistra Urban Futures’ project portfolio and its relation to the SDGs. Further, Sandra will provide a reflection on how these agendas can generate added value to cities’ sustainability work.
