Leading Human Settlements Expert Joins Mistra Urban Futures
Mohamed El Sioufi is one of four Chalmers 150th Jubilee Visiting Professor for 2013. He has over 35 years of experience practicing, advising central and local authorities and teaching at universities in the field of human settlements.
The Department of Architecture is the host and Mohamed El Sioufi will be working with Mistra Urban Futures. “Mohamed will be a great contribution to Mistra Urban Futures, particularly when it comes to developing our international research school”, says Lars Reuterswärd, Director Mistra Urban Futures.” Mohamed El Sioufi will be in Gothenburg, Sweden at several occasions during the fall of 2013 and spring of 2014.
Since 1995, he has worked with UN-HABITAT as a Senior Human Settlements Advisor responsible for capacity development and technical cooperation in the Arab States and Africa. Programmes Mohamed El Sioufi developed and managed include human settlements design, environmental planning and management, governance, housing policy and projects, slum upgrading, post disaster institutional capacity development, and resource mobilization. He conceived,established and coordinates the UN-HABITAT Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme which is operating in more than 40 countries in the African, Arab States, Caribbean and Pacific regions.
Since January 2012, he is the Coordinator for the Housing and Slum Upgrading Branch and the Executive Coordinator of the Global Housing Strategy. The Global Housing Strategy is an innovative initiative that facilitates sharing of up-to-date case studies and activities as they unfold in the field through social and professional media. The initiative also includes developing and sharing evidence-based research among practitioners, local and central authorities, civil society and Habitat Agenda Partners to guide national and city housing and slum upgrading strategies in the context of sustainable urban development.
Mohamed El Sioufi has a Science Masters in Architecture, Human Settlements Design in Developing Countries, MIT, Cambridge, USA and a Doctor of Architecture, Urban Environment, University of Michigan, USA.
